“It can’t get any worse than this.” I think it’s fair to say that most of us have said that at one time or another in our life. Joseph might have said that after his brothers threw him into the pit. He might have begun to doubt his dream when his brothers sold him into slavery. This teenage boy had been favored by his father, had a God-given dream, and was betrayed by his brothers; he might have considered settling for his current circumstances and giving up the dream.

Prospering In The Trial

The Lord was with [Joseph] and the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hand (Genesis 39:21).
Even in slavery, God prospered Joseph. God flourished Joseph in a foreign country, surrounded by people who weren’t of God. A similar blessing reads, if you obey God and follow his commands, God will send a blessing on everything you put your hand to (Deuteronomy 28:1; 8). We will see examples of God showing Joseph favor throughout his trials.

Does It Feel Like God Has Forgotten You?

Have you been mistreated? Are you surrounded by godless people? God has not forgotten you. He has a plan for you and the dream he gave you remains valid. He will prosper you wherever you are but don’t get comfortable. The enemy will continue to throw temptations and trials your way. Being blessed doesn’t mean the path is not challenging and Joseph’s trials are just beginning.
NOTE: You can read Joseph’s story in Genesis 41:1-57.
