Sometimes, you can shift into the wrong gear and before you know it, the engine dies for a minute. It doesn’t mean that it’s over – that you have to abandon the car and start walking. You can restart the engine. In fact, sometimes you can pop the clutch and throw it into a higher gear, going downhill. If you had old junk cars, you know what I’m talking about. I grew up pretty poor, so we’d actually park our car on a hill because we needed to get it started again.
This reminds me of a friend of mine who is close to 70 now. He loves working outside, refurbishing furniture and rehabbing houses. About a year ago, his wife called me screaming, “Oh my gosh! Wayne had a stroke. We don’t know how bad it is.” We immediately began to pray that God’s favor would shift the situation around and that He would do something supernatural in Wayne’s life.
When Wayne came out of the hospital, he could barely move. The right side of his face was paralyzed and when I talked to him on the phone he didn’t sound right. I’m like, “Oh man!” But God put a word into my heart for my friend. “Hey, Wayne,” I said, “God’s not done with you. You’re not going to be stuck in first gear the rest of your life. You’re going to shift right into second, to third, to fourth, back into overdrive and be healthy again!”
I remember arriving at his house after he had just returned from rehab. They had told him, “Well, you’ll probably never be totally 100% again. You’re going to have to learn to live a really slow life – in first gear, essentially. You’re going to have to sell the farm. You’ll need to …” and so on. Yet, he said, “I’m not buying that.” He said, “I’m going to work really hard. I’m not only going to do just what is expected of me in rehab, but I’m going to push further.”
The other day I was at Wayne’s house and he was on his tractor mowing the grass again. He was living again and loving the outdoors again, with no signs of ill effect from the stroke whatsoever.
Maybe you just got a bad report from the doctor, giving you six months to live. Believe God’s going to turn it around. When the car quits running and you are beside the road, open up the hood and say, “I’m going to figure out how to restart my life again.” It’s not over. God is going to do exceeding, abundantly and above all you could ever ask, think, or imagine according to the power that works within you.
I know there are times in life when something happens that seems too big to overcome. You have to have the right mental attitude and say, “This setback is going to have a comeback for me.” Like Joseph said in Genesis 50:20, what was intended as evil against him, God turned it around for his good!
