Goals & Boundaries: Are You Balanced?
The scales at the grocery store that weigh fruits and vegetables have a container that holds the items being weighed. Well, in order to find balance there must be boundaries and to determine where the boundaries are we need to have goals. In this scenario, the goal is to weigh something to make a purchase, but what if you just want to get out of debt?

Goals guide boundaries which create a more balanced life.

Be well-balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [fierce in hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. (1 Peter 5:8 AMP)

Many individuals in our society are overextended, overwhelmed and distracted.

We often label overextended people as workaholics. This person might be a CEO, be a full-time student who works two jobs, or a stay at home Mom raising three kids. No matter who this person is, they need goals, boundaries and balance in order to have success.

Imbalance can create vulnerabilities in our life.

In summary, 1 Peter 5:8 is basically saying that if we are not balanced and vigilant, we create vulnerabilities in our life where we can be “taken down” and failure and pain enter. I don’t think any of us would choose to imagine the portrait of our life with pain and failure in it.

Stop believing the lies.

One of the many reasons people overextend themselves is the myth that they cannot be successful or wealthy and be balanced. So they work, work, work, trying to attain the unattainable in a dissatisfying, no boundaries, unbalanced life.

God wants us to have money, but He doesn’t want money to have US.

Remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant… (Deuteronomy 8:18)

What are your goals? Financial? Emotional? Physical? Kingdom-Oriented?

Whether our goal is financial security, emotional, physical, or to further God’s Kingdom, in order to obtain any one of them, we must have defined goals, set boundaries and then we will have the balance that moves us in our chosen direction. It is then that our scales become more balanced, and the portrait of our life starts to reflect success as intended through God’s eyes.

Join me this month in setting some long term goals and let’s get moving in a focused direction!
