We tend to get so focused on what we aren’t going to do that we end up doing exactly that. How many of us have made New Year’s resolutions only to see it in the rear view mirror after a few weeks. This happens because we don’t make that decision with resolve. We didn’t have our minds made to DO THIS NO MATTER WHAT! The main thing that trips us up is that we stay too focused on what we AREN’T going to do, instead of what we ARE going to do.

Do you focus on what you AREN’T going to do?

How many times have we decided to lose weight, then we get home, we get hungry and that bag of chips has our name all over it. The reason it’s so tantalizing is because we are telling ourselves, I’m not going to eat the chips, I’m not going to eat the chips, I’m not… And then we do. We do what we focus on.

We need to get a vision and fix our focus.

The Bible said, “Without a vision my people perish.” (Habakkuk 2:2) Many of us have dreams and desires that are really not our desire anyway. Remember the Bible says, “I’ll give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4) In order to head in that direction we need to do as Proverbs 4:25 says, “Let your eyes look right on the fixed purpose.” What’s your purpose? “And let your gaze be straight before you.” In other words, it’s saying look here, not over here. We need to fix our focus.

Do our decisions keep us on the path to our dream?

As we focus on the blueprint that maps out a path to our dream, we now can decide if each decision gets us closer to or further away from our dream. For example, when we face a financial decision, we shouldn’t say “I’m not going to spend money.” We need to decide if spending this money will get us closer to or further away from our dream. This works with weight loss, as well. We need to fix our eyes on the roadmap that leads to our dream and stay on that path!

Put God in the middle of it!

Psalms 92:13 it says, “Planted in the house of the Lord they shall flourish in the course of God.” One of the things people overlook is putting God in the middle of their goals. We can’t just say, “Okay God, here’s my plan, bless it.” We need to see what He has put in our heart and ensure that’s where it’s coming from, and not an external influence like keeping up with the Joneses. If we would find out what God’s plan is for our life, the one He put in our heart, then it would already be blessed.

What does the roadmap to your dream look like?

What does your roadmap look like today? Are you making decisions that get you closer to or farther away from your dream? Each day is new, it is never too late to start making better decisions and the BEST one is to put God in the middle of it!
