Enjoy Good Things

We all like to enjoy good things. Many women like to get their nails or hair done. Guys like to buy new fishing equipment or to go on guy’s weekends. These are all good things, but they can add up. God doesn’t want to deny us anything, but sometimes we need to cut back to move forward. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. As long as we are a slave to the lender (Proverbs 22:7), we aren’t getting to do the cool things – – God’s way.

God’s Way

It seems like the slow way to go but trust me, paying with cash is the only way to go. When my Dad cut back on our family budget, he dangled carrots in front of us like a trip to Disney world or buying us a go-kart once we were debt free. His goal was to keep us from being too depressed but also to keep the family marching to the same drum towards the same goal.

We Got Excited

Set a goal. Celebrate the milestones. And remember it’s easy to get impatient and to want it now. Winning this marathon is determined by your ability to sacrifice immediate desires for the long-term freedom for your family.

Be Aware Of The Triggers

TV commercials are set up to introduce us to things that we never knew about and to make us think that we need them. Buying things can become an obsession. Try using a grocery list, pay with cash and if you go over budget, then go put things back on the shelf. Prepare foods in advance for the week and store them in the freezer so that it’s not as tempting to eat out when you’re tired. Just be aware of the triggers and ways to cut costs.

Anticipate And Be Expectant!

We should have a goal freedom date that we will be debt free, but always keep in mind God’s supernatural ability to cancel debt. I have heard amazing stories from people about debt cancellation. When we move toward God, he moves toward us (James 4:8) and they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing (Psalm 34:10). Be expectant and celebrate each move towards your freedom from the lender. I call you blessed. Amen!
