It can be easy to move forward in life reacting to new situations based on past experience. There’s a comfort in using our experience, it feels like a known factor in an unknown world. The idea is that if I did A and the result was B, then I need to stop doing A. Well that depends, was God consulted? If things aren’t going as we would like, maybe we need a new approach in our thinking. We need to remember that we (and our decisions) ARE the one common factor across all of our experiences.
We Change Our Thinking And We Change Our Past
Each of us needs to make our own decision not to focus on the past, yet we tend to roll it around in our heads anyway. Consider that in each minute we are creating a new past. Just now, that last sentence moved into the past. In fact, by the end of this blog, this blog will be in your past and this new information will change your life. If we want to have a better picture in the rearview mirror, we need to change our thinking. If we change our thinking, our decisions and behavior will change and we will have a different past to think about in the future.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.’ Romans 12:2
By Changing Our Present Thinking, We Can Start Focusing On The Future And Let The Past Be The Past
We don’t know specifics about the future so in order to stay in our comfort zone we focus on the past. The problem is that we can’t change what is done. We can only change what we are doing. We need to focus on the present and our hope for the future. Our concern about the past will be lessened and we will learn to look forward instead of back. The enemy wants us to look back with regret, while God wants us to look forward with hope. The enemy wants to condemn us, while God wants us to walk in victory.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
