As a child, the world revolves around us. Others feed, clothe and take care of us. When we grow up, we need to realize life is not about US. We need to be an adult and get out of the high chair. Selfish people say serve me, bless me, and feed me. By the time we are 18-20 years old, we BETTER be serving ourselves! The bird’s purpose is to fly, the fish swims and the dog barks. We have a purpose and fulfilling it isn’t for the people, but for God. Most of all, we cannot do it from a child’s high chair.
It’s Not Just About FEELING God
We worship, but worship is more than just singing praises and FEELING God. It is ushering, passing out new visitor bags, arriving early to serve coffee, or welcoming newcomers into the family. There are so many ways to contribute whether by vacuuming, serving in the nursery or playing the piano.
Maturity Is The Next Level
At some point in life, maturity gives us the desire to move on from being served, fed, counseled, consoled and burped. We need to realize that we are full grown and have put away childish things. (1 Corinthians 13:11)
Servant Leadership
Christ modeled servant leadership by washing the dirty bare feet of his friends after they were full from a big meal. Once the disciples saw Jesus doing that, they offered to do it as well. The question is why didn’t they offer to do it before HE did? The church is woven together by different ministries. We can serve in the parking lot, run the camera, or clean the bathroom. If you don’t know how, the question is, are you willing to learn? We’ll teach you!
Be Encouraged
Being like Jesus is not just sharing his message in words. We could contract out every church need. But it is so much more personal and personally rewarding when the people take care of the church family, and it’s needs. If you think you’re still in the high chair, let me encourage you to volunteer. You might be surprised at how many options are available. Are you willing?
