Have you ever gone into a store for one thing and walked out with 20 things? Many times we don’t know what we want until we see it. We need to get a picture or representation of our goal in front of us so that we see it daily. We can put it on the refrigerator, the bathroom mirror or framed on our desk at work. We can put that goal on our computer screensaver, as a background on our phone or as our Facebook cover photo. Whatever we do, we need to get that goal in front of us so that every decision we make requires us to consider our goal first.

To Reach A Destination, We Have To Know Our Current Location

Now let’s inventory what we owe and get a plan together. The enemy wants you to feel bad about this part of the process. DON’T. We cannot solve a problem when we don’t even know exactly where we stand. This is like trying to figure out what’s wrong with a car engine. What parts need replacing, how much do they cost and how much do we need to earn to get them paid off? This is no blame, just identifying facts and making a plan. This a starting point. This is a GOOD THING!

Map It Out

My Dad taught me to list out debts and start paying on the lowest balance in order to get momentum. The reward comes sooner this way. There’s NOTHING like seeing that debt show a zero balance. My Dad also taught me how to pay an extra $100 a month towards my mortgage when he realized that would get the loan paid off 5 years earlier. There are home loan amortization calculators (for other loans too) on the internet to help you visualize how even the smallest extra paid towards a mortgage principle will cut years off of the end of the loan. My Dad (David Crank) explains these principles in his book Godly Finances.

Celebrate Every Victory!

It took years for any one of us to get into debt; it will take time to get out of debt. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t listen to the enemy. Keep watching the balances drop and celebrate EVERY victory no matter how small. Set milestones and celebrate when you reach each one. NO matter what, enjoy the journey. Many times God wants us to get as much out of the journey as we get out of reaching the destination.
