Imagine two 8-year-old boys in a glass room full of manure. One throws a fit saying, “Life stinks! This always happens to me!” The other little boy digs like crazy and when asked why, he says, “There HAS to be a pony under here SOMEWHERE!” Which of these two attitudes do we see reflected in our own lives?

Contentment Is An Attitude Towards Life

In the Bible, Paul said, “I have learned to be content in any circumstance.” Philippians 4:11 It is possible to have peace and contentment no matter how tough our circumstances. We THINK money will improve our attitude and sense of contentment, but if we can’t be content with very little we will never have enough to be content. And surprise, surprise, the more we own the more we have to worry about. Whether we have a little or a lot, the enemy will find a way to steal our joy. So have a plan to move forward, but make the choice to be content now.

Contentment In Action: Today’s World

Robert Morris says in his book, The Blessed Life, that he and his wife were more satisfied living on 30% of their income while tithing 70% than when they were living on 90% and tithing 10%. God taught them contentment. He also taught them that you can’t out give God, but you’ll have to read the book to learn more about that.

Choose To Desire Prosperity More Than Pleasure

Money has been the ruin of so many people. God is tired of giving money to people who abuse it and don’t send it back through the Kingdom. Money is not evil, it is the love of money that is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). We need to do what others are not and embrace delayed gratification. We need to stop sprinting with our money and start the marathon for the long term.

“Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.” Proverbs 13:11

Some Things Are Caught Rather Than Taught

We are born to consume. We learn to give. My daughter has learned to tithe because she sees me do it. She sees me tithe on income, on gifts, on any increase. She sees me give when God nudges me to. We need to teach our kids to give and we can’t afford not to tithe. When we rob from God, we are opening the door to give the enemy a foothold in our life.
