I was advised recently to “watch what you say” and the advice was warranted. I had been saying words of agreement out of one side of my mouth. Then, out of the other side of my mouth I cancelled out those words. 1) We get what we say, choose words as if they are investments and 2) a tongue is like a tiny rudder steering a big ship, don’t underestimate its ability to influence circumstances.

First, We Get What We Say

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. (Proverbs 18:21)

We need to treat every word as an investment of or expenditure in our future. If we keep speaking negatively, we are subtracting the potential from our future. We are chipping away at God’s blessings by disagreeing with him. Choose words of investment. Choose to agree with God in every way, every day.

Second, The Tongue Is Like A Tiny Rudder Steering A Big Ship

And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong, in the same way the tongue makes grand speeches. (James 3:4-5)

If anyone struggles to visualize this comparison, consider how quickly bad news spreads, whether accurate or not. It happens in every community, including Facebook. Now imagine people walking around speaking positively about everything they experience. Are their words steering the ship into shallow rocks or are they headed for fair winds and following seas?

If We Don’t Like The Circumstances, We Need To Change What We Say About Them

Our life, our company, our school, our neighborhood, our church is a large potential of energy that can be steered towards the positive or the negative. If we don’t like what’s going on around us, we can change it just by being the one person to change our words. As one person, our tongue can change the direction of an entire community. Will you join me in being a part of that change?
