As a professional, how do you feel about receiving advice from a layperson? How about from God? A group of professional fishermen had been out fishing all day with nothing to show for it. Jesus suggested that they go back out and try again. These were professionals receiving advice from a layperson. However, they must have seen something in Jesus that made them want to follow His advice. The boat was the same, the people were the same, the water was the same, but now God was invited onto the boat and THAT was a game changer.

God Gets Amazing Results!

The Disciples were ecstatic about the enormous size of their catch. Jesus told them to throw their nets over the right side of the boat this time. What a difference that made! Sometimes we get rebellious and our pride just doesn’t want us to listen to that still small voice inside. Sometimes it’s about location, timing, or obedience, but it’s always about God.

God’s Ways Don’t Have To Make Sense, We Just Have To Obey And Have Faith

Do we fish with the right bait? Do we use the bait that God has told us to use whether it makes sense to us or not? Do we step out in faith? The Disciples threw their nets on God’s word. It’s a trust issue when God tells us to go deep. Deep is beyond our reach. It means we can’t reach down with a toe and touch the bottom anymore. It’s out of our comfort zone. If God tells us to go, we need to do it. God is never late. In fact, God’s timing ensures He gets the glory, because He waits just long enough so that we KNOW it was Him and not us who accomplished it.

Sometimes We’re Afraid Even Though God Is On The Boat

While filming “Reel It In” I was looking into the lower part of the boat. It reminded me of the story in Matthew 8:23-27. Jesus was asleep in the bottom of the boat while the disciples were on deck freaking out over the increasing winds of a hurricane-strength storm. The Disciples woke Jesus and pleaded for Him to save them. He asked why they had such little faith, rebuked the storm, and it calmed. Sometimes we are afraid even when God is on the boat.

God Has Given Us Authority In His Name And He Wants Us To Use It

Jesus gave us all authority and power in His name. (Luke 9:1, Proverbs 18:21, Matthew 18:18?) I encourage you to invite Jesus into the boat today. Invite Him into your day, your life, and your circumstances. Use your God-given authority over the situation in front of you. Agree with God about your circumstances, remember He’s on the boat, trust Him, and be expectant that God is going to do something great in your circumstances today!
