It’s easy to be impatient. It’s easy to want the adrenaline rush or feeling of control when we go out and buy things we don’t need like a new TV, microwave, or iPhone. The buzz is temporary. The high goes back to an everyday average, except with more debt this time.
Riches Gained In Haste Will Be Lost (Proverbs 28:20)
We shoot ourselves in the foot when we run out and satisfy our desire for immediate gratification. When we react to the short term, we influence the long-term. Our long-term debt won’t go away if we don’t start making different short term decisions.
Refocus The Adrenaline Rush And Get Excited About Every Milestone
God wants us to enjoy things, but he does not want sorrow to be added to it (Proverbs 10:22). When we put ourselves on a budget, we need to monitor our progress. Progress of any kind should excite us because it is a measuring stick, a tool, NOT something to make us feel bad. We can get an adrenaline rush by watching our debt go down. Pay attention to all of the interest (money) that is not being handed over to the bank.
Be Empowered
Think about the things you would do if you were debt free. Would you take a trip, have a debt free home or car, have savings, pay God your tithes? Would you help girls get out of sex trafficking, buy blankets for the homeless, or help a single Mom get car repairs? There are so many things we can do with money, but we can’t do that unless we HAVE money and stop giving it to the bank in interest.
Be Encouraged!
Lord, we know that you bless us to be a blessing. There are times that people have gotten caught up in blessing themselves and fell into the trap of debt. I know they want to be debt free but they struggle to imagine it. Help them to tangibly grasp the feeling they will have when they are debt free. Lord, help them to see that you can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to your power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20). I call you debt free and blessed! Amen!
